Patients Concern
Disease/Condition Glossary
Muscle Pain: Muscle pain can be a symptom of an underlying disease or a disorder by itself. It is defined as ache and soreness of the muscles that result in body pain. Causes of muscular pain can range from sprains and fractures to chronic fatigue, stress and exercise.
Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It occurs due to the breakdown of cartilage that cushions and protects the bones. The disease progresses gradually and tends to worsen if not treated. Symptoms include joint pain in the hips, lower back, knees and hands. It is commonly seen in post-menopausal women.
Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a state in which the bones become weak and brittle. It is often brought about by disease and age (menopausal osteoporosis). In osteoporosis, the activity of bone-destroying cells surpasses the activity of bone-forming cells. Most people do not suffer from any symptoms until there’s a fracture and bones literally start to break.
Post-Menopausal Osteopenia: Osteopenia means a loss in bone density. Post-menopausal osteopenia is weakened bones related to age and menopausal changes in women. Osteopenia is a notch milder than full-blown osteoporosis. Symptoms include joint pain, especially around the knees, weakness, lethargy and stiff movements. A lot of women over 50 suffer from this condition.
